What’s New in Barcodes? 2D!
Recently, MSI was approached by a customer to produce 2D barcodes for a Government contract.
After some research and bar code scanner investment, MSI was able to produce the desired 2D barcodes per the customer’s specifications.
2D vs 1D (standard barcodes)
The conventional 1D barcode can only encode information in the one horizontal direction while the 2D barcode can encode information in both the horizontal and the vertical directions. This allows for more information in tighter area.
Question: Will 2D barcodes replace 1D (Standard barcodes)?
Answer: Doubtful, because 1D barcodes tend to be more robust and easier to read in most cases. 1D barcodes can have more degradation and still be read as compared to 2D barcodes.
2D barcodes are also another great application for the HP Indigo digital press. The higher density and larger amount of information put a premium on PRINT QUALITY. As you have learned in the past, the HP Indigo prints at a resolution of 1440 DPI.
